Michael Karl Karlsson, MD, PhD, postdoc
My research focuses on acute cerebral mitochondrial dysfunction as a pathophysiological mechanism following ischemic and traumatic brain injury and exploring this as a therapeutic target. One example of this is the development of novel cell-permeable succinate pro-drugs, that target a specific dysfunction related to complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, that we have previously demonstrated in large animal models of ischemic and traumatic brain injury. I previously have a PhD in neurophysiology from Lund University in Sweden. I am currently a co-investigator on major funding awards from both the US National Institute of Health (NIH) and the US Department of Defense to develop therapeutics that target dysfunctional mitochondrial metabolism.

My research focus on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and intracranial pressure (ICP) physiology in general and in the setting of acute brain injury, malignant cerebral infarction and subarachnoid haemorrhage. I am part of Copenhagen CSF Study Group and I have a PhD degree in clinical research from University of Copenhagen based on studies of long-term ICP following decompressive craniectomy and cranioplasty. I continue this line of research and current studies in the pipeline include investigations of the effect of cranioplasty on intracranial fluid movements, surgical alternatives to decompressive craniectomy and inclusion of patient relatives in decision making in acute neurocritical care. Furthermore, I am co-supervisor of several PhD students and undergraduate/postgraduate researchers.

Christian Mirian, MD, Research fellow
My research interests are primarily within the epidemiology of brain tumors in nation-wide and international settings. Particularly, I focus on the individual patient data meta-analysis. The basic idea is to compile patient data collected from relevant studies into larger cohorts. This allows us to explore the effect of e.g. molecular profiles or specific treatments more profoundly compared to the individual study. Especially, we have investigated the diagnostics, prognostication and treatment of meningiomas including the Ki-67 proliferative index, TERT gene alterations and somatostatin receptor targeted radiopeptides in such compiled cohorts.
I supervise undergraduate researchers.

Internship, junior physician, Department of Neurosurgery
Research fellow and associated researcher, Department of Neurosurgery
Master of Public Health-fellow, University of Copenhagen
Teacher of gross anatomy, Institute of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Copenhagen
